Three years after his death, the “nova” recovery of the “Mercante di Venezia” is a tribute to the last emperor of Italian theater, Giorgio Albertazzi, with his reduction of Shakespearean comedy. The topics addressed are those eternally dear to the Bardo but also to the late Tuscan star performer: the conflict between generations; the beauty that dies and that redeems itself at the same time (in the background a Venice divided between Thomas Mann and Giorgio Baffo); youth that has to deal with the transformations of time and society (the crisis of the economic and cultural power of the lagoon, absorbed by a carnival, a metaphor for a persistent spring of life that is “perennial, loving the senses and not repenting”, as Sandro Penna would say). As Shylock the great Mariano Rigillo while Princess Porzia is played by Romina Mondello.
